Traveling with family – especially with children can be complex, especially if it is a country as distant and unique as New Zealand.
As I began to read and build the trip I realized that it was not enough to see both New Zealand and Australia as much as I wanted in two months and so when I had to choose one it was clear that it would be New Zealand which is also more beautiful and interesting in nature and smaller and more comfortable for a month and a half – two month trip. But I felt that if I was already on the other side of the world, then I needed to add another destination to reach in New Zealand and that is how the trip became New Zealand and Fiji, which I will write in a separate post.
Trip Composition: Two parents and two boys aged 5 years old and 1 year old.
Duration: a month and a half – when we spend two weeks on the North Island and a month on the South Island.

✈ Flights: We flew with Turkish in two directions in each direction. Walking through Thailand and back through Singapore. All are excellent companies when Singapore was by far the best and most luxurious airline. We did not risk a short break in Turkey which could lower the cost of flights and it is good that their new field is huge and they do not know how to operate efficiently, because after landing the plane continued to travel in the field for another 20 minutes and a pickup bus was also needed which also traveled a few minutes in the field . We preferred without additional challenges of getting out of the field for a night or more during concussion stops. We spent 3-5 hours in the various concerts when the kids brought in strollers to sleep in when needed. The duration of flights 23 hours and about 15 hours accumulates at the airports – before and during the flights … was really less difficult than it probably sounds.
Car rental: After inquiries from various companies in the country and New Zealand, we went to a local company called Omega, which was the cheapest including a ferry crossing, even after taking their most comprehensive insurance (which does not include any tire insurance).
To us it was important to continue with the car to the South Island, beyond the hassle with all the equipment and small children, the car became part of us on the trip and we left a lot of things in it, sometimes even food that did not require a refrigerator and because of the cold weather we got it in the morning as if it was in the refrigerator😉
Accommodation: We slept in different hotels… 28 To be exact and it was perfect! I personally, do not connect to sleeping in a box on wheels (Most of the tourists I know slept in RV), but I was open to the idea that this way the trip could flow more (in retrospect this is not entirely true). The issue came down when we realized that the ceiling height was 2 meters high and had 1.95 and even for small children like our hotel rooms they gave much more space that was important to them – one to practice standing and walking and the other to jump between the beds in the room. I highly recommend the hotels in New Zealand – reasonable prices and not always more expensive for a daily cost of a trailer, many of the hotels offered are few-room apartments, studio apartments or even standard hotel rooms, but very Spacious and most of them have a fully equipped kitchen (and even a personal washer and dryer) so we went out to eat one meal a day outside and the other two prepared ourselves. Once you plan two nights in the area that has more to see and one night in places that are road stops, there is a complete flow of the trip in the event of rain or any other snowfall, especially when it comes to hiking with children. Anything you couldn’t see today because of the rain you can see tomorrow or morning That after you set off for the next destination … Caravan also has a limit to how many will stay in one place without it affecting the continuation of the trip, everything should suffice.
Also, recommend not to get carried away with a lot of luggage. In the caravan any space is important and in hotels it is of course cumbersome. What we did (also on previous trips) we packed two
Suitcases: one large and one medium with all the clothes (yes yes, four people in two suitcases) and we brought another trolley suitcase that was used during the change clothes and security to start the trip if the suitcases did not arrive and during the trip it was used As our only suitcase – we just changed clothes every few days for the next few days to Trolley. It turned out that the big suitcases were taken out every few good days, usually when we were already doing laundry and needed reorganization.
Season: So we were before the start of the season which starts these days and culminates in December – January. My recommendation – For those who are not looking to do day treks up in the mountains, you will hike there, like us, in the spring. So it’s true that their spring is more of our winter and most of the time you have to dress warmly, but you hike without sweating, enjoy breathtaking views of a lot of snow (and not just peaks) and enjoy a greater flow of hiking – no pressure to close anything upfront, no queues and prices Also cheaper to close hotels and to rent in RV.
Money: The New Zealand Dollar is currently 2.25. The money conversion in the country and the credit bill charge can be the same so there is no point in bringing in a lot of cash except the initial cash, which is … Many hotels and some businesses charge their own credit bill fee, a fee that can be 2-3 percent and then along with the interest rate. Theirs and the interest rate that the credit company in Israel takes is really high … so it’s better to spend money and pay cash.
A little general information about New Zealand: a beautiful country that is 13 times larger than the Israeli territory and the number of its residents is about half the number of Israeli residents … meaning there are many very uninhabited areas – so much nature and the beauty around you that you regret not having a camera on your head that records every moment you drive or walk in the country.
It has everything – waterfalls, rivers, lakes, snowy mountains and green hills and plains Switzerland-Austria style and green hills Scenic landscapes Scotland, geysers, hot springs, lots of wonderful rainforests with interesting trunks and branches, besides the fear of meeting you In some scary and dangerous animal (it has no dangerous animals, unlike Australia), you totally feel in the heart of a wild jungle, a lot of sea animals and a variety of birds among which the famous catapult (to me, one bird is particularly impressive in
