If you are looking for beautiful and colourful buildings, charming houses with lots of history, or to put it simply a fairytale town, then look no further and visit Colmar, France. Colmar is a colourful village that is located near the border with Germany. Thankfully all the wars in Europe did not destroy all the historical places keeping them all intact.
Colmar is the place that is well-known as the capital of the most prestigious Alsace wine. If you plan to visit Colmar and want to taste the most beautiful wine in France, then you’ve arrived at the right place. We will tell you everything you need to know so your Nextravel trip in Colmar would be a blast.
Discover the Hidden History of the Colmar Old Town
The old town does not only have beautiful historic architecture, but also a lot of rich and hidden history. Some of the buildings there like Dominican Church, the Pfister House, the Maison des Têtes and others will transport your body and soul to another age. Local tour guides can give you a history tour for a price (starting from 15 Euros), but you can always take a brochure from the gift shops and explore it yourself(we highly recommend that).
Another great place to visit is Little Venice. Even though it is not as grand as the real one, Little Venice has its own charms. You can explore it either by foot or by a boat ride that usually lasts around 30 minutes. In the end, you won’t regret it because you will go into a colourful world of houses and cobblestone roads.
Also while being in Colmar it is a good idea to explore other villages. France has tons of them, yet the most beautiful ones are located near this area. If you like bikes, then you are in luck. One of the best activities to do is visiting Vieille Ville d’Eguisheim on a bike. We recommend visiting this village because it is pretty close to the village of Colmar and has a lot of secrets worth discovering. If you don’t like bikes, then you can always rent a car. Even though cars are a bit of expensive to rent in France, experiencing a secret European flavour is totally worth the money.
As New Year and Christmas are getting closer, Colmar should be on your radar. Visiting Colmar is ideal for the holidays because of the Christmas Market. It is a must, for those who are eager getting into the Christmas spirit, because Colmar, like many other places in the region, gets really festive (like seen nowhere in Europe). You will see beautiful Christmas decorations, treats and most importantly lively crowd that will get your Christmas cheer on a high even if you a Grinch for the holidays!

If you want to fully experience Colmar, then you must try their local food. We recommend tasting The Tarte Flambee ( rolled bread covered with different cheese) Tarte aux poires, Bretzels (some consider it even better than the german pretzels), Backeoffe and much more. On the other to experience the best drinks in Colmar you don’t need to spend a lot of time because of their locally produced wine. We are certain that you will take a couple of bottles for home because they are divine! They make varieties and you can find Pinot Noir, Muscat, Gewurztraminer and many more.
Clothes and Weather:
Best time to visit Colmar is in the summer until late September. The temperature is on average 24 degrees Celsius during summer. Rain is present nearly throughout the year, and when snow falls temperature gets really low. So that means always bring a raincoat, and warm clothes during winter!
Hotels: You can find many small BB and Hotels in Colmar. The prices can get high during the summer period and Christmas, but paying around 50 euros or more per night in France is not that expensive.
Nightlife: The nightlife in Colmar happens in their local restaurants and bars. L’Ateiler du Peintre is a good choice for you if you like to eat modern French cuisine and drink beautiful wine. Also if you look for the young and alternative crowd then visit Les 3 Singes Colmar bar. Friendly service, a lot of beer to choose from (mostly local) and good parties. If you like cocktals then we recommend Les Incorruptibles. Good cocktails, good crowd.
